About Peninsula Valdés Natural Reserve

Peninsula Valdés Natural Reserve is situated on the northeastern coast of Patagonia in Argentina's Chubut Province. This protected area covers extensive coastal lands and marine habitats characterized by cliffs, beaches, salt flats, and steppe ecosystems. Established as a nature reserve in 1994 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, Peninsula Valdés is globally recognized for its extraordinary biodiversity, particularly its marine mammals. The reserve is a critical breeding and feeding ground for southern right whales, which return to the sheltered bays from June to December. Visitors can witness these majestic whales, along with other marine species such as orcas, elephant seals, sea lions, and Magellanic penguins. The terrestrial environment supports a diverse array of wildlife including guanacos, rheas, armadillos, and numerous bird species. The reserve also has archaeological significance with evidence of indigenous Tehuelche occupation dating back thousands of years. Key visitor experiences emphasize wildlife watching from viewpoints like Punta Norte and Caleta Valdés, scenic drives along unpaved roads, and exploring remote beaches and cliffs. Activities include guided tours, photography, and educational programs focused on conservation. The reserve’s arid climate results in stark landscapes that contrast with vibrant marine life, offering a unique blend of Patagonian wilderness and oceanic spectacle. Visitors come for both the remarkable wildlife encounters and the striking natural beauty, making Peninsula Valdés a premier destination for eco-tourism in Argentina.
